ScaleUI

In 2023, Richard Yang a I built ScaleUI- a design system and react component library.

At the time, Scale mostly hired fullstack generalists engineers. Afters a few years of rapid product growth- our UI had become a mess. Engineering was incredibly fragmented. Teams were using different tools (MUI styled components, or even just inline styles). None of these worked well. They looked bad, weren't accesible, and code wasn't being shared between teams.

So in Januarary 2023, we set our sights: build a complete collection of 50+ components, support themeing for Scale's various sub-brands, and achieve a critical mass of adoption. Building the components was the easy part. Actually deploying it and getting buy in from the rest of engineering was hard. That's a story for another time.

By the time I left scale in August 2023, we had migrated ~70% of Scale's products to ScaleUI. In turn, Scale's engineers are more productive, data labelers are more efficient, and customers have more trusted our brand.
